What has been everyone's experience either good or bad in trying to get real-world experience doing incident response and computer forensics?

My fiancee just got her Masters in National Security and was seeking out experience putting her computer forensics training to work outside the classroom. It seems like wherever you could get that experience they don't want to hear from you unless you already have 5 years+ of real world experience with security and/or computer forensics. About the only place to reliably get experience is with a law enforcement agency where they will move you to Virginia or wherever and even then it's a struggle to get to a place where you can do this kind of work.

Eventually she was able to find a good position in San Francisco doing Information Security which will could potentially serve as a stepping stone to this sort of work. But we tried a number of options, there's virtually no such thing as an internship in this subject area-we even tried volunteering with the local police to perform associated tasks or work on machines they had obtained but did not have the manpower to fully investigate. Aside from that any company that does this wants you to already have the experience and there's pretty much nothing "entry-level" that I can see.

So what does that leave? Do you try to get a foot in the door doing other info security-type jobs and pile up a bunch of certifications? Do you put an ad in craigslist offering to do free incident response and forensics works to little old ladies who think someone hacked their AOL account? Join the CIA or FBI and hope they decide to throw this kind of work at you? Thoughts?
