I'm goin to school in Grand Rapids, Michigan....and needless to say there arent any schools around here that offer anything like computer or data forensics. Do you know of anywhere that has a program like that? Ive been getting really interested in it, and wanted to see if a career in computer forensics was feasable. What course of action would you reccomend?
Thanks a bunch!

Re: Forensic schools?
Thu, March 11, 2004 - 12:51 PMPurdue's CERIAS -- headed by Gene Spafford -- has an excellent forensics department. Several other schools are starting forensics programs, but you should be able to pursue forensics research at any school that has a strong security research group. However, most of computer science snubs forensics because they view it as a defeatist field of study (ugh), and it's difficult to quantitatively validate forensics research, since the field is primarily qualitatively focused.
I could fill you in on my forensics graduate research experience at a school that doesn't have any forensics professors. -

Re: Forensic schools?
Thu, March 11, 2004 - 11:13 PMDo you need CJ training? seems like most of the programs i looked at (MIT, Florida State, some others) had it as a focal area in a 4 year CJ degree.
I kinda wanted to skip the CJ junk and hop right into geekville. -

Re: Forensic schools?
Fri, March 12, 2004 - 6:58 AMYeah, it depends on how the school views forensics. I think jurisprudence and CJ are interesting, but this field is far too technical for it to be an area within a CJ department.
I'm also wondering if you need forensics-specific degree. A computer science degree with emphases on operating systems, networking, and security should be sufficient. A good internship or three will do wonders for getting your foot in the forensics door after graduation.
Here's the Purdue link about grad school: www.cerias.purdue.edu/educati...program/
Here's a link that lists other schools' programs/courses www.e-evidence.info/education.html -

Re: Forensic schools?
Fri, March 12, 2004 - 12:59 PMMan, my school sucks at promoting themselves. Check out:
www.cis.utulsa.edu/
The U of Tulsa offers two courses in forensics (I've taken both, and so these are my personal notes on them, not the schools):
- Computer and Network Forensics -
Get a little hands on experience with most of the tools and techniques our there, including EnCase.
Laboratory Projects: E-mail Tracking, Interviewing Suspects and Witnesses, Physical and Digital Evidence Gathering, Password Cracking, Investigating Log Files, Extracting Digital Evidence, Investigating Web Hacking Incidents, Restoring Files, Investigating Databases
Capstone Projects: Creating First Responder Policies/Procedures, Investigating Portable Electronic Devices, Creating an Initial Response Toolkit, Investigating Internet Applications
- Advanced Digital Forensics -
Just a research class. Basically, you pick out what you want to research, and then research it, and hope to write a decent paper to get published.
My school has a general computer security program and it is pretty good (I don't have anything to compare it to). I came here because it seemed to be the only school offering courses in security to undergrads. In fact, before I get my BS in computer science, I should end up with all of the "Federal Information Assurance Certificates": CNSS 4011-4015. -

Re: Forensic schools?
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 11:41 PMGentlemen if you wish to be the best learn from the best. 6 years ago I decided to acquire the knowledge and further my abilities. I search and asked those in the know and all pointed in the same direction. In a small Community Collage in Washington state sits a large man, his name is Steve Hailey. For those of you who know who he is your heads are bobbing, for those who don't well if your instructor is any good they learned from Big Guy.
